Australia’s capital hosted a daunting match between Palestine and Iraq on Tuesday, where more than 10 thousand football fans filled the Canberra stadium to cheer for their favourite teams in-group D of the AFC Asian Cup. The match ended with Iraq as the winner.

Regardless of the end results Palestine would not advance to the next round however for its fans recognition of Palestine and the presence of their favourite team in the tournament seems to be the main focus.

Despite the joyful cheers and support for the Palestine national team, back in their home turf they were under constant threat and intimidation by the Israeli regime preventing them to have 5 of their players join them in pre-tournament training; a factor that contributed to their poor results.

Palestine’s national team whom have been practicing under constant restrictions lost all 3 of its games including 2-0 against Iraq however their captain believe they have gained experience and have showed resilience.

Although Palestine’s national team is heading home, their first presence in the Asian Cup and their line up against the top Asian teams have set a new peak for them. A peak that is set to meet new horizons even in the face of oppression and occupation.
